You are invited to dwell in the past in the renowned Red Castle Inn, the incomparable four story mansion crowning forested Prospect Hill. Return to the 19th century, celebrate amid the real splendors and sentiments of that most romantic era in rooms and suites furnished like cherished memories in the Gothic Revival landmark completed in 1860 by Judge John Williams, a mine owner who crossed the Great Plains with his family in 1849.

As one of the first Bed & Breakfast Inns in California, Nevada City's Red Castle has received national recognition not only as one of two remaining Gothic Revival brick homes in the State but also for its award winning unique style of hospitality.

The Inn experience at the Castle focuses on local history, authentic 19th century romantic style, innkeeping that is attentive without being intrusive and fabulous food all prepared on the premises by our own chef and served from a bountifully laden buffet in a style reminiscent of a time when dining was an event to remember.

Guests are frequently joined for late afternoon tea and conversation in the main floor parlor by Mark Twain, the famed 19th century story teller, humorist and lecturer who appeared onstage in the Nevada Theater in 1868.

Surrounded by terraced gardens with fountain ponds, winding footpaths to town lit by fairy lights, unsurpassed views from vine draped verandas on four levels, the Inn's seven rooms and suites offer guests the opportunity to become reacquainted in a setting far removed from 20th century stimuli. Acclaimed for its strong sense of time and place, awarded SF FOCUS' Grand Hotel Award, named one of ten top Historic Country Inns and praised as "tops on my list of places to stay in the Gold Country" by GOURMET MAGAZINE, the Inn attracts guests who treasure each other and appreciate the era that was called the "Tasteful Interlude".

Swan-Levine House was built in 1867 by the Fahey's who owned the Alison Ranch Mine and purchased in 1872 by William Campbell, a local merchant who made his fortune selling mining equipment, general supplies, and baked goods. Campbell remodeled the house in 1895 to its present Queen Anne style.

He sold it to Dr. John Jones who, along with brother Dr. Carl Jones, converted the home to a hospital named after their father, Dr. W.C. Jones. The building served as a community medical center until 1968.

The Levine Family has been renovating this historic building since 1975. The house reflects the many aspects of its history. The Hospital's Room 1 is now the Suite with a queen bed, private bath, and sitting room with fireplace. The old surgery with its octagonal white floor tiles, features a king-bed or extra long twins, white wicker and lots of plants. The adjoining bath has a claw-foot tub/shower combination. A nineteen thirties addition by the hospital has its own entrance, queen bed, bath with claw-foot tub/shower and a small kitchen with refrigerator and microwave. Its decor is appropriate to its place in history as is the decor of the other rooms. The Green Room is a two-room suite with an heirloom, four-poster bed and private bath with clawfoot tub.

A full breakfast is served each morning in the dining room.

Swan-Levine House and Carriage House Press are located in Grass Valley, California. The town, and neighboring Nevada City, are part of a region prominent in California's gold history. There are fine restaurants, state parks, historical landmarks, and many outdoor summer and winter recreational opportunities.

The area also offers a wide variety of cultural activities. Your hosts are actively involved in the local arts community.
